On April 11, 2023, Greg Henington, Judge of Brewster County, declared April 15-22, 2023, as INTERNATIONAL DARK SKY WEEK in Brewster County.
The purpose of this declaration is to encourage the residents of Brewster County to
join him in observing this important week, raising awareness and support for protecting the precious dark skies resources and to help Brewster County be a leader in dark-sky awareness for the region.
This declaration was made possible through the collaborative efforts of many including Linda Beranek of Marathon, TX and Stephen Hummel at McDonald Observatory.

This is a great reminder of why protecting dark skies matters. Seeing a sky full of stars is a special experience that many people rarely get to enjoy today because of increasing light pollution. Efforts like International Dark Sky Week help raise awareness and encourage communities to make small changes that can have a big impact. Just as people search for useful resources online, such as the YaarWin link, it is also important to share information that helps preserve nature. Supporting dark sky initiatives can benefit wildlife, science, and future generations alike.
International Dark Sky Week is a great reminder of how important it is to protect our night skies. Reducing light pollution helps people enjoy the beauty of stars while also supporting wildlife and the environment. Community efforts like this can inspire more regions to take similar steps and create awareness about responsible lighting. Just as people enjoy different forms of digital entertainment such as the YaarWin game online, it is also refreshing to spend time appreciating nature and the peaceful view of a clear, star-filled sky.
